Obvara (Ab-Vara) is a firing process that is believed to have originated in Eastern Europe during the Middle Ages.

It is nicknamed “Baltic Raku” and its earthy beauty is making a strong revival.

 Bisque pots are heated to 1650 o F, dunked into an obvara yeast, flour and water mixture that is “brewed” for 3 days, and then in water to rapidly cool and seal the porous surface.  

The longer a piece is dunked in the obvara mixture, the darker the color becomes…it is a matter of seconds!

Obvara finished pieces are not food safe!
