Saggar is a firing process that uses a sacrificial container or “shell” to enclose bisque pieces with combustible materials.
As the materials burn in a severely reduced oxygen (reduction) atmosphere, they cause natural chemical and colorful reactions.
Different saggars (a larger clay container, aluminum foil, metal cans) and combustible materials (seaweed, copper, salt, banana peels, etc.) produce different result.
This pottery piece was covered in terra sigillata, a fine clay sealer, and was fired in a CLAY CONTAINER with moss, salt and copper to 1165o F.
Saggar finished pieces are not food safe!
