Saggar is a firing process that uses a sacrificial container or “shell” to enclose bisque pieces with combustible materials.
As the materials burn in a severely reduced oxygen atmosphere, (reduction) they cause natural chemical and colorful reactions. Different saggars (a larger clay container, aluminum foil, metal cans) produce different results as do the combustible materials (seaweed, copper, salt, banana peels, etc.). T
his pottery piece was covered in terra sigillata, a fine clay sealer, and was fired in ALUMINUM FOIL with moss, salt and copper to 1165o F.
Saggar finished pieces are not food safe!
